Tuesday In the Forest, October 11, 2011 with James Anthony and Melissa Rae

James and Melissa returned to Michigan after over half a year away, living in Philly and then Massachusettes. When I booked them as guests, no one was sure how long they’d be in town for, but luckily they’ve since stuck around. This night was a fun opportunity for me to bust out some honky tonk hits, which don’t get their day in the forest often enough. James has a deep knowledge of both jazz and traditional hillbilly tunes, so we started out with some of his favorite jazz tracks. Melissa also took a shift behind the turntables and played exclusively her all-time favorite artist: Dolly Parton. Melissa and James also played an excellent acoustic set, with yours truly sitting in on stand-up bass in what remains my only public performance on the instrument. Good times.
